Co-op setup
Host save, Join Code, crossplay, and world-size checks
Big Walk
A current Big Walk co-op checklist for choosing the host, finding the Join Code, using crossplay, picking 2-player/3-player/4+ worlds, and keeping the same save going.
Quick answer
Pick the host first, because that player keeps the save. When the group returns, the same host should start the session, choose the 2-player, 3-player, or 4+ world size that fits the minimum group staying for the session, then share the Join Code or let platform friends join after the host is already loaded in.
Checked 2026-08-31: the official FAQ says the host owns the save, Join Codes are generated per hosted session, crossplay is supported, and each hosted world starts as a 2-player, 3-player, or 4+ player version. Current competitor pages cover the broad multiplayer guide well, so this page stays narrow and checklist-first.
Join decision table
| Symptom | First check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Co-op setup | Before the first session, choose a host who can reliably return, because the host is the keeper of the save game and progress. | Big Walk co-op issues usually become easier when the group verifies one reversible condition at a time. |
| The group is about to restart | If the group is continuing a previous journey, have the original host start playing first; a different player should not assume they can continue the same save. | Restarting every player wastes the session if the first problem is host, code, version, voice, or bandwidth. |
| A fix asks for risky changes | Do not promise random matchmaking when the official FAQ says the game is made for organized groups. | The site keeps troubleshooting safe, reversible, and tied to source-backed steps. |
Checklist
- Before the first session, choose a host who can reliably return, because the host is the keeper of the save game and progress.
- If the group is continuing a previous journey, have the original host start playing first; a different player should not assume they can continue the same save.
- When the host starts a session, choose the 2-player, 3-player, or 4+ world version as the minimum number of players expected to stay for the session.
- If four people start but one may leave early, consider the 3-player world so the remaining group is not locked into a setup that expects more people.
- After the host has loaded into the world, join through the platform friends list when it appears.
- If the friends list does not show the session, use the Join Code; Mac App Store players should expect to use a Join Code because that version does not use Game Center friend sessions.
- Ask the host to find the Join Code in the corner of the host menu before starting, or inside Session Details after the game has started.
- Set or change the session password from Session Details if the code is being shared outside a small private group.
- If someone cannot connect, confirm the host is already in the world, everyone has compatible first two version numbers, every device is online, and Epic Online Services is reachable.
- If the host leaves or disconnects, expect everyone else to be disconnected; plan a clean restart with the same host instead of trying random host changes.
Do not do this
- Do not promise random matchmaking when the official FAQ says the game is made for organized groups.
- Do not guess platform menu labels without checking that platform.
- Do not tell players a new host can continue the old save unless the host-transfer behavior is verified.
- Do not show a Join Code or session password on stream or in a public screenshot.
- Do not reset router, proxy, or system settings before checking host loaded state, Join Code, version compatibility, and EOS reachability.
Frequently asked questions
Who should host a Big Walk session?
Choose the person who can reliably return for future sessions. The official FAQ says the host is the keeper of the save game and all progress, so the same host needs to host again when the group wants to continue.
Does Big Walk support crossplay?
Yes. The official FAQ says Big Walk supports crossplay, with Windows, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 listed as supported platforms.
Should we pick 2-player, 3-player, or 4+ when starting?
Pick the setting as the minimum number of players who will stay for the session. If someone may leave early, choose the lower world size so the remaining group is not stuck with a setup that expects more players.
Where does the host find the Join Code?
The host can see the Join Code in the corner of the host menu before starting. After the session starts, the host can open the in-game menu and go to Session Details.
What should we try if a friend's game does not show up?
First add the player as a friend on the platform when possible. If the session still does not appear, use the Join Code. The official FAQ specifically calls out Join Codes as the fallback for non-friend and cross-platform cases.
